Welcome to week 8 of our series on the 99 Skills of 21st Century Market Place. This week we'll be focusing on three critical skills that are essential for success in today's rapidly evolving business landscape: Strategic Planning, Project Management, and Social Media Proficiency. These skills are increasingly important as companies strive to stay ahead of the curve, navigate market disruptions, and build a strong online presence. In this blog, we'll explore the key aspects of each of these skills, their importance, and how they can be developed to drive success in your career or business. So, let's dive in!

22. Strategic Planning

A Quote :

“Plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.” ~ Dwight Eisenhower (Former President of the United States of America)

An Example :

Strategic planning is a critical process that enables organizations to identify their long-term objectives and devise a roadmap to achieve them. One example of how strategic planning helped save the day is the story of a company that was facing intense competition in its market, they were experiencing a decline in sales and struggling to stay afloat in a highly competitive market. The management team realized that they needed to take a more strategic approach to their business if they were to survive. They started by analyzing the market trends and the needs of their customers, and identified a gap in the market that they could fill with a new product line.

The management team then formulated a strategic plan to launch the new product line, which included a detailed marketing strategy, a budget, and a timeline. They delegated tasks to different departments and held regular meetings to track progress and make adjustments as needed.

Thanks to their strategic planning, the company was able to successfully launch the new product line and turn their business around. They not only regained their market share but also expanded their customer base, leading to increased revenue and profitability. The success of their strategic planning not only saved the company but also positioned them for long-term growth and success.

A Definition : The process of defining an organization's mission, vision, and goals, and developing a roadmap for achieving them. It involves analyzing internal and external factors that may impact the organization's success, identifying opportunities and risks, and developing strategies to optimize performance and achieve long-term success.

A Checklist :

  • Define organizational goals and objectives

  • Conduct a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats)

  • Identify key performance indicators (KPIs)

  • Develop an action plan with measurable targets

  • Monitor progress and adjust strategies as necessary

23. Project Management

A Quote :

Project management can be defined as a way of developing structure in a complex project, where the independent variables of time, cost, resources and human behaviour come together.” ~ Rory Burke (Author of Project Management books)

An Example :

In 2015, Tesla faced a critical challenge in the production of its Model X SUV. The company's ambitious plans to release the vehicle had hit a major snag as they struggled to address a design flaw in the complicated falcon-wing doors, which kept causing delays in the assembly line. As a result, Tesla faced a potential crisis, as the production bottleneck threatened to impact the company's financial results and damage its reputation.

To overcome the challenge, Tesla brought in a team of experienced project managers to tackle the problem. They analyzed the issue using a range of project management techniques, including risk analysis, critical path analysis, and stakeholder management. They worked with the design team to identify a solution, which involved redesigning the door mechanism to make it more robust and easier to install.

The project management team then worked closely with the production team to develop a new production plan that would ensure the smooth implementation of the redesign. They created a detailed timeline, which included a rigorous testing process to ensure that the new design was effective and met all safety standards.

Thanks to the project management team's efforts, the redesigned doors were successfully implemented, and production of the Model X resumed without any further delays. Tesla was able to avoid a potential crisis and maintain its reputation as a leading innovator in the automotive industry. This example highlights the importance of project management in identifying and addressing complex issues, ensuring effective collaboration between teams, and delivering successful outcomes.

A Definition : The process of planning, organizing, and controlling resources (people, time, and budget) to achieve specific goals and objectives within a defined timeframe. Project management involves various stages, including initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closure, and requires a range of skills such as leadership, communication, and problem-solving.

A Checklist :

  • Define project goals and scope

  • Develop a project plan with timelines and milestones

  • Identify necessary resources and budget

  • Assign tasks and responsibilities

  • Monitor progress and make adjustments as necessary

24. Social Media Proficiency

A Quote :

"The power of social media is it forces necessary change." ~Erik Qualman, Author & Digital Marketing Expert

An Example :

Social media proficiency has become an essential skill for businesses to thrive in today's digital age. One notable example is the case of the fast-food chain, Wendy's. In 2017, a Twitter user asked Wendy's how many retweets he needed for a year's supply of free chicken nuggets. The official Wendy's Twitter account responded with a challenge, asking the user to get 18 million retweets. The tweet quickly went viral and gained worldwide attention. Wendy's social media team capitalized on this moment and launched a marketing campaign with the hashtag #NuggsForCarter, creating a buzz around the brand and generating millions of impressions.

This example shows the importance of having a social media-savvy team that can identify and seize opportunities to engage with the audience and promote the brand. Social media proficiency enables businesses to connect with their customers, build a loyal following, and enhance their online presence. It also helps companies to stay on top of the latest social media trends, create impactful content, and monitor and manage their online reputation. In today's competitive marketplace, having a team with social media proficiency is crucial for businesses to stay ahead of the curve and succeed.

A Definition : The ability to use social media platforms effectively for communication, marketing, and other purposes. This includes a broad range of skills, such as content creation, community management, analytics, and advertising, and is essential in today's digital age for businesses and individuals looking to build their brand and engage with their target audience.

A Checklist :

  • Develop a social media strategy that aligns with overall business goals

  • Choose appropriate social media platforms to reach target audience

  • Create engaging and relevant content

  • Build and maintain relationships with followers

  • Analyze and measure the effectiveness of social media campaigns
