Commander Abhilash Tomy and An Ongoing Journey of Courage and Resilience

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

As the sun rises over the ocean, we are reminded of the vastness of our world and the infinite possibilities that lie before us. In this moment, we honour the bravery and resilience of seafarers everywhere, who venture into the unknown with nothing but their skills, their faith, and their love for the sea.

One such seafarer is Commander Abhilash Tomy, Kirti Chakra, Nao Sena Medal, Indian Navy Veteran, a living legend in the maritime world, who is currently on the cusp of completing a solo circumnavigation under sail in the Golden Globe Race 2022. With just three participants remaining in this gruelling race, Commander Tomy is already assured of a podium finish, but his journey is not just about winning a race or setting a record. It is about pushing the boundaries of what we believe is possible and inspiring us all to be better, braver, and more resilient.

The race has drawn tens of thousands of enthusiasts and a #TomyArmy of few hundred Indian fans. It draws attention to the need for increasing #SeaMindedness and promoting #MaritimeConsciousness in India. Many of these passionate followers are passive encouragers and there are a few arm chair "expert" analysts. Whichever category you choose to be in, take up the mantle of being proud inheritors of the legacy of #MaritimeIndia!

The sea has always been a symbol of the unknown, a place of danger and mystery that has captured our imagination for centuries. Yet it is also a place of beauty, of grace, and of wonder, where we can witness the power and majesty of nature in all its glory. For seafarers, the ocean is not just a workplace, but a calling, a way of life that demands their full attention and respect.

As we follow Commander Tomy's progress on the Golden Globe Race 2022 tracker, we are reminded of the words of Isaiah 43:2: "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you." Indeed, the sea can be treacherous, but with faith and perseverance, we can overcome any obstacle and emerge stronger than ever before.

On this Sunday morning, let us offer our prayers and cheers to Commander Abhilash Tomy and all seafarers, past and present, who have braved the elements and sailed the seas with courage and grace. May they continue to inspire us with their bravery, and may we honour their legacy by embracing the unknown and daring to dream.
