Numbness and Nostalgia: A Naval Veteran’s Week

Updated: Aug 12

As July transitioned into August of 2024, it was a passage through a labyrinth of emotions, a voyage marked by profound loss and deep reminiscence. This Indian Navy veteran, found himself navigating the tumultuous waters of grief and nostalgia, reflecting on the legacy of comradeship and the enduring bonds forged in service.

Farewell to a Triumphant Maritime Warrior

On the dawn of 30th July 2024, my batchmates (called 70th Elites) and I, lost a cherished friend, Commodore Joginder Chandna, VSM. "Jogi", as we fondly called him, passed away peacefully in his sleep, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. His passing was not just the end of a life but the closing of a chapter filled with valour, dedication, and warmth.

The shock may have lessened, but the disbelief lingers. Jogi, the multitasker, unfazed by almost anything, and a friend who sweetly scolded me into making well-proportioned tea, will remain imprinted in our collective memory. His ability to bring joy, his unwavering dedication, and his infectious smile are qualities we will forever cherish.

I shared my sorrow with my students in Mumbai, explaining why my usual joy was absent, I silently tracked his final journey through group chats, finding solace in a call with another batchmate. We, who remain, will honour the excellence Jogi embodied and the spirit he left behind. Salute 🫡

Jogi was given a befitting farewell, surrounded by family and friends who travelled from afar to pay their respects. The ceremonial send-off, attended by Naval and Army top brass, highlighted the respect and admiration he garnered throughout his life. His balanced personality, sharp intellect, warm heart, and cheerful demeanour are what many will miss the most. His charming smile and hearty laughter were constants in our lives, leaving behind fond memories and inspirational deeds.

Even the marathon circuit buzzed with his untimely demise, reflecting his impact beyond the naval community. As an avid marathoner, Jogi had completed numerous marathons and half marathons across the country, spreading messages of peace and harmony. His untimely passing has inspired many to carry forward his unfulfilled goals. May his soul rest in peace as he sails to his heavenly abode.

The Navy Foundation’s announcement captured his distinguished career and post-retirement pursuits, highlighting his contributions and the void his passing leaves. His journey from being awarded the Sword of Honour in the Midshipmen Board to his post-retirement achievements exemplifies a life of service and passion.

Reconnecting with the Past at INS Mandovi, Goa

Amidst this sombre backdrop, a glimmer of joy emerged from a reunion with my 35th Integrated Cadets Course (ICC) buddies at Goa. On 3rd August 1987, I joined the Naval Academy at INS Mandovi, and 37 years later, on 3rd August 2024, five of us revisited the very corridors and dormitory where our naval journey began.

The nostalgia was palpable as we walked through the familiar halls, recounting the early days of our training. The shared stories and laughter brought back the camaraderie and the unyielding spirit that defined our formative years in the Navy. It was as if time had stood still, and for those moments, we were young cadets once again, filled with dreams and aspirations.

The reunion, though small in number, felt complete with the presence of those who could attend. The cherished timeless moments reminded us of the strong bonds that launched our incredible naval voyage. As we left, the workspace beckoned, but the memories lingered, a testament to the enduring spirit of our naval brotherhood.

A Voyage of Pride and Poignance

As we approach 15th August 2024, when India, that is Bharat, turns 77, the reflections of this week resonate even more deeply. Navigating the journey of life as a naval veteran is akin to sailing through uncharted waters. There are moments of calm and joy, punctuated by storms of loss and grief. Yet, through it all, there is a profound sense of pride and gratitude. Pride in having served with distinction, and gratitude for the lifelong friendships and the rich legacy of service to our nation.

This week has been a poignant reminder of the journey we have undertaken and the people who have been a part of it. While we mourn the loss of Jogi, we also celebrate the enduring bonds of friendship and the shared memories that continue to unite us. Numbness and nostalgia are intertwined in our experiences as naval veterans, reminding us to cherish each moment and honour the legacy of those who have sailed on to another shore.

As India enters into its 78th year of modern independence, it is a time to reflect on our continuing service to a nation that has gifted us a rich personal legacy. Our journey does not end with retirement; it evolves as we navigate new pathways of learning and contribution. The lessons learned, the friendships forged, and the unwavering spirit that defines us as naval veterans guide us forward.

As we continue to sail the seas of life, may we always remember the sacrifices made, the bonds strengthened, and the pride of serving our great nation. Sail on, dear friends, with pride and poignance, as we honour the past and embrace the future, continuing our voyage of service and dedication to Bharat.
